Welcome Underpaid Advisers

Nice to meet you!  You can bet I'm probably somewhere working on yearbook right now.  Want some ideas? Here's what I've got....

Stories From An Underpaid Yearbook Adviser: A Survival Guide

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably been tasked with creating the only historical document your school will ever have—the yearbook! It’s a big responsibility, and if you’re like me, you may not have been given much to start with beyond a few vague resources from your printer or some cryptic notes left behind by the former adviser.

I've been there.

That’s why I started this blog—to share the resources, systems, and lessons I’ve built and used in my own classroom to make yearbook not just manageable, but meaningful. The job of a yearbook adviser is incredibly rewarding, but let’s be honest: it also comes with a heavy load. You’re managing staff, fundraising, teaching journalistic skills, running a business, and spending countless hours helping shape both the structure of the course and the book itself. And sometimes, you might even find yourself creating the entire book alone.

My hope is that I can ease those fears and give you tools I wish someone had handed me when I first started. This is my seventh yearbook, and along the way my staff and I have won several awards for our publication. More importantly, I’ve found my groove and fallen in love with this work. Now, I wouldn’t trade the adviser’s role for anything, and I want to help you get to that same place of confidence and joy.

So, welcome! I’m glad you’re here. Whether you’re brand new to yearbook or looking for fresh ideas after years in the role, I hope the resources, reflections, and activities you find here make your year a little easier and a lot more fun.
