Building Excitement and Prestige Around Your Yearbook Staff
One of the best investments you can make in your yearbook program has nothing to do with cameras, computers, or even design—it’s about people. If you want a thriving, motivated, and proud yearbook staff, you have to create an atmosphere where your students feel valued, important, and even a little bit VIP. When staff members see themselves as storytellers, journalists, and leaders, that energy spreads throughout the school and increases interest in joining yearbook for years to come.
Start with a Promo Video
Kick off the year with a big splash. Create a short promo video for your school’s social media pages or morning announcements that introduces the new staff. A few ideas:
“Once Upon a Time…” → Tease the idea that the yearbook is the story of the school year. End with your tagline: “Capturing the Story of the Year.”
The Brady Bunch Grid → Feature staff headshots filling in squares one by one until the grid is full, with students looking around at each other. End with “The Yearbook Bunch.”
“We’re Back” Energy → Quick, punchy clips of your staffers laughing, brainstorming, or even holding cameras—set to upbeat music.
The goal isn’t a polished Hollywood production—it’s about visibility and giving your staff a sense of pride.
Build a “Meet the Staff” Page
If your program has a website, dedicate a section to staff bios. Ask each student to write a short profile that answers fun and engaging prompts like:
Why did you join yearbook?
What clubs, sports, or activities are you part of?
What topics will you be reporting on?
What’s something we wouldn’t know about you?
What’s your go-to coffee order?
These little details not only make staff feel seen, but they also help readers connect with the people behind the book.
Promote Staff in the Hallways
If video editing isn’t your strong suit, there are other great ways to spotlight your staff:
Staff Posters: Hang colorful, professional-style posters with headshots, names, positions, and coverage areas.
Press Passes: Create fancy press passes with custom lanyards that say Yearbook Staff—students love wearing them at events.
Bulletin Boards: Dedicate a bulletin board in a high-traffic hallway or outside your classroom to feature staff pictures and fun facts.
Why It Matters
When students feel like they’re part of something exclusive and important, they step into their roles with more confidence and pride. They work harder, they recruit others, and they start to see the yearbook not just as a class, but as a calling. And honestly? Advisers deserve that same sense of prestige, too. Creating a VIP culture around your program elevates the whole experience for everyone involved.
