Theme Example: You Know the Name

You Know the Name delivered a bold, cohesive theme rooted in our school identity. The design leaned heavily on school colors, layered dynamically across spreads to reinforce spirit and recognition. Advisor’s note: We chose this theme because it was especially relevant to the year. Our school was in the media a lot, and at times we felt infamous. Almost an entirely new school board was brought in with different views and experiences, and some of their controversial policies resulted in media attention and even student walkouts. At the same time, we also made headlines for positive reasons—athletic titles, club achievements, and major signing events. It was the perfect theme: the idea that we don’t need an introduction, you already know the name! We spun it as a point of pride, framing our students as innovators and trendsetters at the top of their game.

Spin-off themes framed the book around five reasons why our name is known: culture, sports, clubs, academics, and students. Each divider expanded on this idea, introducing its section by explaining how our name carries meaning in that area, while also offering playful or alternative “names” students might be called.

Inside, the spreads built on theme with strict attention to a consistent style guide. Titles and graphics featured repeating design elements like name tags, yellow-on-yellow or red-on-red overlays, and duotone cut-out imagery. This tight visual system tied every page together, creating a strong theme and a clear design voice that stayed consistent throughout—exactly what you want to aim for in a standout yearbook.
